1teaspoonvanilla extract

1/4cupcherry juiceFrom the canned cherries or fresh.

1/2cupdark chocolate shavingsOr grated chocolate.
1tablespooncocoa powderOptional for garnish.
Method
Prepare the Cake
Bake the cake according to the box or recipe. Let it cool fully, then cut or break it into bite-size pieces.
Whip the Cream
In a bowl, whip the heavy cream with powdered sugar and vanilla extract until soft peaks form.
Prepare the Cherries
If using canned cherries, drain some juice into a small bowl and keep the cherries. Add 1/4 cup cherry juice to the cherries for extra flavor. If using fresh, simmer briefly with a little sugar and 1/4 cup water to make a syrup, then cool.
Assemble the Trifle
In a clear trifle bowl, place a layer of cake pieces.
Spoon cherries and some juice over the cake, then add a layer of vanilla pudding.
Spread whipped cream on top. Repeat the layers until the bowl is full.
Finish with whipped cream on top.
Let it Chill
Cover and chill the trifle for at least 2 hours or overnight to help the layers set and flavors blend.
The trifle can be made ahead of time and is perfect for parties. Use day-old cake for firmer layers, and drain canned cherries but save some juice for extra flavor.
