Ingredients

Main Ingredients
  • 2 large large oranges
  • 2 cups granulated sugar
  • 2 cups water
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract optional

Method

Preparation
  1. Slice the oranges into 1/4 inch thick rounds.
  2. In a medium saucepan, combine the sugar and water. Bring to a simmer over medium heat, stirring until the sugar dissolves.
  3. Add the orange slices to the syrup and reduce the heat to low. Simmer for about 45 minutes until the slices become translucent.
  4. Remove the slices from the syrup and place them on a wire rack to cool.
  5. Optional: Once cool, you can sprinkle the slices with a little additional sugar if desired for extra sweetness.
  6. Let them dry for a few hours before serving or storing.

Notes

Use thin, even slices to cook evenly. Keep the syrup at a low simmer to avoid breaking the slices. Let air circulate while drying on the wire rack. If syrup gets too thick, add a little water and warm gently. Store in an airtight container at room temperature for 1-2 weeks, or freeze for longer storage.
