Ingredients

For the crust
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour Plus extra for rolling out
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, chilled and diced
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 cup ice water
For the filling
  • 4 cups sliced apples (such as Granny Smith) Tart apples are recommended
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • 3/4 cup brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg
  • 1/4 cup all-purpose flour (for thickening)
For the glaze
  • 1 cup powdered sugar
  • 2 tablespoons milk
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Method

Preparation
  1. Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C).
  2. In a bowl, combine 2 cups of all-purpose flour, chilled and diced butter, granulated sugar, and salt. Mix until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
  3. Gradually add ice water until the dough comes together.
  4. Divide the dough in half, wrap each half in plastic wrap, and chill for about 30 minutes.
Assembly
  1. Roll out one half of the dough on a floured surface to fit a greased sheet pan (approximately 15x10 inches). Place the rolled dough into the pan.
  2. In a separate bowl, combine the sliced apples with lemon juice, brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, and 1/4 cup all-purpose flour. Toss until well-coated, then spread this apple mixture over the crust in the pan.
  3. Roll out the second half of the dough and place it over the apple filling. Seal the edges by crimping them together.
Baking
  1. Bake for 45-50 minutes, or until the crust is golden and the filling is bubbling.
  2. Allow the pie to cool completely before icing.
Glazing
  1. For the glaze, whisk together powdered sugar, milk, and vanilla extract until smooth, then drizzle over the cooled pie before serving.

Notes

Ingredient Substitutions: If you don’t have Granny Smith apples, other tart apples like Honeycrisp or Braeburn work well too. For a vegan option, substitute the butter with coconut oil or a vegan butter alternative. Optional Variations: Add a handful of raisins or cranberries to the apple filling for an extra layer of flavor. You can also sprinkle some chopped nuts on top before glazing for added crunch! Storage or Reheating Tips: Store any leftovers in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 3 days. To reheat, pop slices in a 350°F (175°C) oven until warmed through.
